A good relationship is so easy. There are certainly trials and ups-and-downs and irrational outbursts and unreasonable explanations and baggage, but it’s not hard. It is coated with an easy sort of unencumbered-ness, as Adrienne Rich says, lovers “unlearn that clumsiness of rare intrusion/ And let each other freely come and go.” It’s barely even learning though in the right relationship—you and the other person somehow arrived at this point in life with a shared sense of values and aesthetic—how incredible to find someone who understands! How important, to find someone who attends to your most sacred self, who appreciates and encourages the parts that you also believe in. The person who sees you play a note or write a line or pick a color or make a comment or laugh, and sees not only that moment but the interwoven, complex strands of you who brought such a thing about. How rare.
